The Competing Caricatures of OpenAI

Is Openai a for-profit wolf in sheep's clothing or nonprofit knight in shining armor? Two recent writings paint different pictures.

Things are relatively quiet regarding Openai these days. Recall that Elon Musk is desperately trying to thwart Openai’s plan to sell most of its assets to a for-profit public benefit corporation. His motivation, as he describes it, is that artificial intelligence is much too dangerous to be in the hands of profit-seekers. Never mind that Elon has his own privately held AI company. It is a public benefit corporation exactly like the kind Sam Altman and his gang of nerds are trying to convert OpenAI into.
